on January 14, 2014

We are deep into our author study of Eric Carle. Here is a chart summarizing 3 of his books we have read so far.

In Writer’s Workshop we are going to write a fantasy story similar to Eric Carle’s stories. We noticed that many of his books use animals as the main characters, has an interesting setting, and a problem and solution. We brainstormed some possible ideas for stories we will write.

Tomorrow, we will do a rewriting activity where we will select an animal, setting, problem, and solution for our story.
Keeping with the Eric Carle theme. We are going to make an art piece inspired by the famous author/illustrator’s illustrations. He uses pretty paper to create his collage-like illustrations. Today we had a pretty paper making factory. We had 5 stations where we created as many pretty papers as possible. There were watercolor, paint, chalk, marker, and oil crayon stations. The students were at each station for 5 minutes. I am excited to use the pretty paper tomorrow in our art creations.

Finally in math this week we are exploring the 120 chart. We are using it to explore number patterns and solve problems.

A great app to use to practice using the 100 chart is called Math Adventures Number Find Lite. The students have to find numbers on the 100 grid. There is an easy and hard version.
