Here is a copy of the note that will come home tomorrow about the changes in spelling.  I wanted to get it home today, but it will come home tomorrow.  Thanks for understanding.

Families of B3,

As discussed at conferences, there is a change in spelling instruction and assessment.  No longer will we be sending the traditional spelling list home on Monday and then take a test on Friday. Instead, spelling will be integrated into your child’s reading and writing.  We still will be teaching spelling and spelling patterns at school, we will just approach it differently.  We will be looking at different word families and spelling patterns during guided reading.  Your first grader will be working on spelling words and patterns that best fit his or her spelling needs. When we are done with a unit (usually each unit will last between 4-5 weeks) there will be an assessment that will be sent home.  Attached are the words that your first grader is working on.  Please practice these words at home the same way you have practiced spelling words in the past.  Practice the words one section at a time and move on when your first grader has mastered the words in that section.  Make sure to focus on the patterns you see in the words.  I will send another set a words home when your child is ready for them and after we assess.  Please let me know if you have any questions as this approach to spelling is also new to me.  Thank you for all you do! J

Sincerely,

Mrs. Rodriguez
