Monday’s Events

on October 22, 2012

Today was a good day!  The students were a little tired after the long weekend.  Here are some of the highlights:

  • We worked on the comprehension strategy of making predictions.  When we make predictions we become more engaged in our reading.  This helps us understand the story better.  After reading, we confirm if our predictions are correct or not.  We practiced making predictions by reading the book Hattie and the Fox.
  • We learned about the -all word family.  Even though we will no longer be having weekly spelling tests, we will still be learning about a word family a week as a class.  This week we are learning about -all words as in fall, ball, and call.  Your first grader will be working on different words during their guided reading time during Daily 5.  A note (see post below) will come home tomorrow along with some words to practice.
  • We learned about accuracy strategy called “Skip the Word.”  We will use “Skip the Word” when we come to a word we do not know.  It is not good to skip a lot of words on a page, but sometimes if there are 1 or 2 words we do not know we can skip it so we can keep reading.
  • We had 2 rounds of Daily 5 today.  It was great to see the first graders working so hard.  Each reading group did their best and the first graders not with a teacher worked very well independently.
  • During math we worked on subtraction story problems.  We also had 2 stations.  Some students played a math game that reinforced addition and subtraction, some worked on problems in our math journals, and some played a hands-on subtraction game.
  • In social studies we learned more about US symbols.  We learned about the flag, the bald eagle, the statue of liberty, and more.

Have a wonderful evening! 🙂
