Tuesday and Wednesday’s Events

on October 4, 2012

During the past couple of days we have been working on the comprehension strategy of retelling.  When we retell the story we are able to tell what happened first, next, then, & finally.  The tricky part is we can’t retell everything from the whole story, just the most important details.  On Tuesday we retold the story A Chair For My Mother and today we practiced retelling Alexander, Who Used to Be Rich Last Sunday.  I was very impressed with how well the first graders were able to pick out the most important events from the stories.

We also started guided reading groups this week.  If not working with me in a guided reading group, each first grader makes a Daily 5 choice.  Here are some pictures from during Daily 5 on Tuesday.

Mrs. Paton came to teach us a lesson today.  She taught us the importance of self-talk in order to stay focused and ignore distractions in order to do our best learning.  The first graders have been able to transfer the things Mrs. Paton has taught us to our learning in our classroom.

In math this week we have been learning a lot about addition equations.  We have been learning how to prove our addition equations are correct by making circle drawings.  Today we had math workshop.  We were able to make a math with self  (unifex cube puzzles, pattern block puzzles, and odd and even coloring sheet) or math with someone (Even Steven and Odd Todd game and Roll to 20) choice.

In social studies this week we have been learning about needs and wants.  The first graders are pros at determining the difference between needs and wants.  Today, we worked together to make a needs and wants collage from pictures from magazines (if you have any old magazine to donate we would appreciate them.  We cut out a lot of pictures today.  Just make sure the magazines are appropriate for first graders. 🙂 ) Here are some pictures from our needs and wants activity today.

Lastly, make sure your first grader is dressed for the weather tomorrow.  It is going to be much cooler than it was today.  Have a wonderful night! 🙂
