Tuesday and Wednesday’s Events

on September 20, 2012

We have been reading books with characters who are voracious readers this week.  On Tuesday we read the book Wolf!  The main character is determined to become a better reader and does so by reading A LOT of books.  Here is the chart we made after reading to show our understanding of the book.
During reading we stopped to check for understanding.  If we needed to, we went back to re-read parts of the book we did not understand or had questions about.

We also added another part to our Daily 5 routine.  We learned how to read to someone.  When we read to someone we read the same book and sit EEKK.  EEKK helps us remember that we need to sit elbow to elbow and knee to knee.  It is so fun to read with our friends!

Mrs. Paton came in today for the first of a 4-week lesson about listening and learning skills.  Today she taught us how to have our eyes watching, ears listening, voices, quiet, and bodies still in order to do our best learning.

In math we continued our math stations.  The first graders of B3 are quite the mathematicians.  They are getting so good at finding the partners of a given total.  It is fun to see them work in the different math stations during math workshop.

Lastly, Ms. Robyn has been teaching us all about bus safety this week.  Today she showed us a very cool website where we could be detectives and find all the places where it was unsafe.  The first graders really enjoyed this activity.  Here is the link if you want to try it from home.

We have media tomorrow, so make sure your first grader brings his or her media books to school.  Also, please check the Wednesday envelopes and return the empty envelopes to school on Thursday.  Place any papers to be turned back into me in the red take-home folder.  Thank you!
