We Are Writers!

on October 19, 2011

Today was a very exciting day!  Many of us got a chance to read our first fancy copy from Writer’s Workshop.  Each first grader did a good job writing a true story about their life.  Some of us still are adding the finishing touches to our writing, so we will listen to more authors tomorrow. I will post pictures after everyone was able to read.

Besides sharing our writing, we also went a little batty today.  We read the wonderful story Stellaluna by Janell Cannon.  After reading we retold the story by writing down what happened first, next, then, and finally.  Good readers show that they comprehend the story when they are able to retell the major events.  It was tricky, because we could not write down every detail.  I was impressed with how well the first graders could identify the major events of the story.

In math we learned a new activity called number quilt to practice our addition fact fluency.  Your first grader should have brought home red flash cards today.  Use these cards to practice addition math facts.  When we know a math problem “by heart” we call it math power!

We also worked on a fun bat art project.  We will have to finish it tomorrow.  Take care and have a wonderful night!
