Today’s News

on October 13, 2011

Today we were very busy!  Here are some of the highlights:

  • We learned a fun new activity in Morning Meeting.  It is called Arm Hockey. In order to play, we have to use teamwork and self-control.  We have to make sure that we are being safe while trying to score goals.  It is a very fun game!
  • We learned that good readers make text to self connections.  When we make text to self connections we are able to understand the st0ry better.  We read Tomie DePaola’s book The Art Lesson.  After reading, we shared parts of the story that we could make connections to.  When your first grader reads at home see if they can connect the story to his or her personal life.
  • We worked on our spelling words today.  We now have 6 ways we know how to practice our words.  Today we learned “spin a spelling word.”  Ask your first grader how they practiced his or her spelling words today.
  • In math we practiced counting money with nickels and pennies.  We learned a game called “Roll to 25 cents.”  In order to play the game, we had toroll a die, take the correct amount, and exhange 5 pennies for a nickel.  The first one to get to 25 cents won!

Remember, no school Friday.  I will see more of you at conferences tomorrow night!  Take care!
