Today’s Highlights!

on February 24, 2011

Today was a great day in B3!  Here are some of the highlights:

  • In reading we learned a new comprehension strategy.  We learned how to infer and support with evidence while reading.  This sounds complicated, but we practiced and learned that we can do it! Sometimes the author does not tell us everything we need to know within the text. We need to use the clues from the pictures, our background knowledge, or from the other words to help us.  For example, in our story A Bed Full of Cats by Holly Keller, we infer that the main character Lee was scared.  The author did not say that Lee was scared, but the illustrations and the things Lee did helped us infer that Lee was scared.  Work on inferring at home when reading with your child.
  • We also learned our new sight and vocabulary words.  We have been working on describing what the new words mean by not using the word itself.
  • We worked on comparison story problems in math.  We really have to think hard to solve these problems.  Sometimes drawing a picture, or making an equation, or even making a graph can help us solve these problems.
  • We learned more about the continents and the oceans today in social studies. We learned that there are 4 oceans and 7 continents.  See if your first grader can name any of them!

Thank you for all you do!  It was so great to see so many of you at Solo’s Pizza last night.  What a great night!
