Rice Lake Elementary

Busy Day!

on January 25, 2011

Today was a great day!  Here are a few of the highlights:

  • We read the fantasy story On the Way to the Pond. During reading we made predictions.  Making predictions allows us to be active readers.  We also have to connect to the text so we can make reasonable predictions.  For example, in our story today we read about a hippo and a tiger who went on a picnic.  We talked about using what we know about picnics to make reasonable predictions.
  • We learned about Bossy R again. This week the Bossy R words are tricky because /ir/, /ur/, and /er/ all make the same sound.  We will spend some more time this week learning this sound and reading and spelling words with this sound.
  • We learned how we need to capitalize the first letter of special places like Rice Lake Elementary or Minnesota.
  • We all worked on becoming a better reader or writer during Daily 5.  Ask your first grader how they are working on their CAFE goal and what they did today to become a better reader.
  • We talked about how to use dimes, nickels, and pennies to make coin amounts in math.  We talked about showing a certain amount with the fewest amount of coins.  During Math with Someone we had to show how many different ways we could show different coin amounts.  We had to think creatively!
  • We worked very hard in Writer’s Workshop. We talked about the importance of adding details in our small moment narratives.  We have spend a lot of time making our writing readable and today we talked with our partners about things we can do to make our writing more interesting by adding more details.
  • We also celebrated Peyton’s birthday.  Happy birthday Peyton!

Your first grader brought home a permission slip to Solo’s Pizza today.  Please sign and return.
